Preview: First DTM round of the season 2015 at Hockenheim

30.4.2015. The Mercedes-AMG DTM Team will be competing on home territory next weekend (1st – 3rd May) as the new DTM season gets underway. The Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg traditionally hosts both the season opener and the grand finale.

The track: The 4.574 km Hockenheimring boasts the fastest section of track in the whole DTM season, with cars reaching a top speed of 270kph between the Parabolica and the hairpin. The full-throttle percentage over a single lap is 64%. Seven corners are traversed at speeds of over 100kph, while the remaining four are taken at under 100kph.

The team: The Mercedes-AMG DTM Team has entered eight Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM cars for the new season. New to the team are the two DTM rookies Lucas Auer and Maximilian Götz. They join series veterans Daniel Juncadella, Gary Paffett, Paul Di Resta, Christian Vietoris, Pascal Wehrlein and Robert Wickens. Supplementing the two teams from the previous campaign – HWA AG and Mücke Motorsport – is the French outfit, ART Grand Prix, which will be preparing two of the Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTMs.

The Rules: The DTM promises even more action and thrills for its large fan base this year. Starting with the season opener at Hockenheim, there will now be two races per weekend. The most important features at a glance:
Saturday – Qualifying 1 & Race 1:

Qualifying for Race 1 (20 minutes)
Race 1: 40 minutes + 1 lap
Full points awarded
Use of DRS permitted three times per lap (must be within one second of the car ahead)

No mandatory pit stop
One tyre compound only
(Seven sets of tyres per driver per weekend, four for qualifying and race)

Sunday – Qualifying 2 & Race 2:

Qualifying for Race 2 (20 minutes)
Race 2: 60 minutes + 1 lap
Full points awarded
Use of DRS permitted three times per lap (must be within one second of the car ahead)

One mandatory pit stop (tyre change)
One tyre compound only
(Seven sets of tyres per driver per weekend, four for qualifying and race)

We have worked intensively over the winter to improve the performance of our cars and to restructure our team so that we can close the gap on the opposition in the upcoming season. But even if we’re not quite up to the standard of our competitors yet, we will not be burying our heads in the sand: we have grown much closer together as a team over the winter months. Whether we can manage to do that as early as this weekend is impossible to say. Let’s wait and see how qualifying goes on Saturday.
